THE SOUL OF THE LILAC

Photographer: Victoria Zavarnitsyna
Model:  Yulia Yurchevskaya

This is more than just a series of photographs about spring. It is an immersion into its soul—quiet, introverted, full of memories and premonitions. In this project, photographer Victoria Zavornitsyna and artist Yulia Yurchevskaya explore not the ceremonial beauty of blossoms, but their intimate, almost mystical essence.

The muted colors, soft twilight-like light, and a subtle film grain create a dreamlike atmosphere where time stands still. The heroine here is not a model posing among flowers. She is the spirit of this garden, the living soul of Vrubel’s painting “The Lilac"—a mysterious entity, inseparable from nature, engaged in a silent dialogue with every branch.

Key Motifs of the Series:

  • Memory and Nostalgia: The lilac is a powerful symbol of the past in our culture. It carries the scent of childhood, a grandmother’s garden, the dawn of first love. The old wooden houses in the background deepen this feeling, turning the frame into a gateway to memory.
  • Inner Stillness: There is no loud delight in these photographs, but a profound sense of fullness. It is a state of contemplation, where the artist merges with the moment, absorbing its beauty to preserve it forever.
  • The Premonition of Creation: This series is the visual embodiment of the moment that precedes creation. It is the silent process of gathering material—color, light, emotion—for a future canvas. It is the artist’s gaze, soaking in the world’s palette before translating it into art.

“The Soul of the Lilac” is a visual poem about how the world’s beauty becomes part of an artist’s soul, destined to blossom one day in a new form. It’s a story about finding that rare five-petaled flower, not to consume it for luck, but to let it bloom within you.
