THE BLACK SHADOW
Yulia Yurchevskaya & Yulia Pazukhina
The dark counterpart of a visual diptych exploring the warrior’s path. This series delves into the Shadow archetype and chthonic forces through the lens of Japanese mythology. The traditional Oni mask, the deep black kimono, and the bared blade transform the figure on the riverbank into a mystical guardian spirit. Here, the water and stones witness an ancient ritual where darkness signifies not the absence of light, but a concentration of primal, untamed energy and sacred mystery.
“In 'The Black Shadow' collaboration, Yulia Pazukhina and I unveil the reverse, nocturnal side of our visual parable. While the white archetype sought stillness, the black accumulates raw power. The Oni mask and the dark silhouette amidst the pristine landscape recreate the atmosphere of an ancient legend. The movements of the blade over the flowing water become a ritual of subduing chaos. It is a manifesto on embracing one’s shadow self, the magic of the night, and the strength born from absolute stealth and composure. This is the aesthetic of a Gothic Eastern avant-garde, frozen outside of time.”
