PHANTOMS
Yulia Yurchevskaya & Yulia Pazukhina
An art project at the intersection of Fine Art photography, optical illusions, and psychoanalysis. Utilizing the in-camera double exposure method, the authors deconstruct the human form, turning silhouettes into ghostly mental projections—phantoms. Faceless figures in contrasting black and white bodysuits symbolize the dualism of human nature, while dynamic turquoise and red color bursts create an atmosphere of emotional chaos. Fabrics emerging through the outlines of the bodies blur the line between the physical and the illusory.
“In the 'Phantoms' collaboration, Yulia Pazukhina and I explore the flip side of consciousness and the traces left behind by our thoughts, fears, and hidden facets of personality. We wanted to capture the intangible. Fitted masks and bodysuits strip the characters of their individuality, turning them into pure archetypes, into incorporeal spirits. Through manual optical alchemy—double exposure—we force space to penetrate through the bodies, and lightweight fabrics to become part of the skin. The clash of monochrome with contrasting red and turquoise beams is a visualization of internal dialogue, mental noise, and a borderline state where reality splinters, exposing the world of our inner phantoms.”
