AN ELECTRIC PULSE IN A STEEL HEART

A photographic collaboration by Victoria Zavornitsyna and Yulia Yurchevskaya

Project Concept

This series is a visual manifesto about the collision of two worlds: the vibrant energy of a human being and the cold, monumental geometry of the industrial landscape. Born from a moment of chance—a spontaneous entry into a train repair depot—this project evolved into a profound study of contrasts.

The fuchsia color worn by the heroine becomes the main protagonist. It’s not just clothing; it’s a flash, a brilliant impulse invading a monochrome world of metal, concrete, and grease. It is a challenge to the grayscale, an assertion of life in a realm dominated by stasis and mechanics.

Key Motifs of the Series:

  • The Individual vs. The System: Trains and depots represent a colossal, ordered mechanism, a world of slumbering steel giants. In this world, artist Yulia Yurchevskaya is not a passenger following a schedule. She is an explorer, an intruder who climbs the wagons and enters the cabins, claiming the space and filling it with her own energy.
  • The Hero’s Journey: The series unfolds like a story. It begins with a defiant conquest (shots on the train), followed by a moment of vulnerability and exhaustion (the figure lying on the concrete steps). This particular shot is incredibly powerful: the vibrant suit contrasts with the listless pose, as if all her energy has been given to this steel world, and now, a pause is needed.
  • Beauty in the Utilitarian: Victoria Zavornitsyna finds aesthetics in things created for function, not beauty. Rust, peeling paint, wires, and technical inscriptions all become the perfect backdrop, their brutalism only serving to emphasize the heroine’s fragility and vitality.

“An Electric Pulse” is a metaphor for the creative act. The artist invades an ordered, sometimes hostile world, leaves their bright mark on it, becomes drained by the struggle, but ultimately finds a new harmony, having tamed this “steel beast.” It’s a story about how art is born not in sterile studios, but in the very heart of a raw, coarse, and real life.
